    Developing Your Career

"What holds most people back isn't the quality of their ideas, but their lack of faith in themselves. You have to live your life as if you are already where you want to be."

    Russell Simmons

    TEDtalk Spotlight

Adam Galinsky: "How to Speak Up for Yourself"

    https://www.ted.com/talks/adam_galinsky_how_to_speak_up_for_yourself

In this TEDtalk, Adam Galinsky discusses how to speak up for yourself. He provides strategies about how to advocate for yourself. While this talk is not genetic counselor specific, being able to assert yourself and speak up are skills that we as genetic counselors need throughout our careers.

    Self Reflection/Discussion

    • Reflect on a time when you have needed to assert yourself. What was the situation? How did you find the confidence to stand up to what you needed? Were you successful?
    • Is there a strategy from Adam's talk you think you may want to try? Which strategy is it? How do you think you would like to use it?

Key points to consider about building and serving a community:

    1. Speaking up for yourself can be difficult at any point in your life
    2. Strategies exist to help build confidence to increase a person's "range" and have additional confidence and courage to speak up
